Masked Bandit

Shiva and I saw our new friend again this morning. Of course, I didn’t have my camera with me. I never do when something cute happens. This time the raccoon was sitting in the middle of the boardwalk. Just sitting there staring at us with his big intelligent eyes. He is a big fellow, maybe twice the size of our cat. Obviously he finds enough food in neighbouring back yards to eke out a living.

I didn’t know what to do. Should I move forward? Will it run away? Should we turn around? Shiva seemed more curious than anything today. She was smart enough not to lunge forward, instead started sniffing the air and ground. After thirty seconds or so she woofed and the raccoon must have decided it was time to amble off. He slowly climbed off the boardwalk and then scooted up the nearest tree. That’s when Shiva started to get excited so I figured it was best to vacate the area.

The raccoon was oddly cute, watching us from a thick branch as we continued on our way. I know they are destructive little monsters but this is the first time I’ve ever really looked one in the eye. They are clearly very bright. He didn’t look at all afraid of us yet he knew enough to back off from a potential battle that wasn’t worth fighting.

I imagine we’ll be seeing him again. As long as he stays out of my garbage, I think I can live with that.
