No, but she can pretend!

Here it is, the moment you have all been waiting for!

Okay, so you probably really don’t care. Too bad! I’m gonna talk about it anyway.

Today is the day I unveil Shiva’s latest trick. The idea for which I took from Shauna’s excellent suggestion many eons ago.

Actually, that is a bald-faced lie. The truth is, I attempted to train this half a year ago. When Shiva’s genius brain didn’t pick it up after thirty seconds I declared it a lost cause. That’s how I roll, apparently. Our next dog better be just as motivated as she is or he is screwed.

But I digress. Shauna’s comment made me think I should attempt the trick again. Shiva thanks you. I thank you. Because it is the cutest trick ever. Even cuter than tilting her head.

I am not quite sure why this took longer than other behaviours to train. Perhaps because she already knows “Wave” and the two are so similar? Even this second successful attempt took a lot longer than most. It was pretty difficult to shape; I had to put something on her nose for the first 6747 times to even get close to an offered paw lift. Which felt like cheating.

There must be a better way to go about this and if you know please share your intelligence in the comments.

After about two weeks of working for a few minutes every day, suddenly she just offered it. Just out of the blue at a moment when I’d actually been training something else. How typical, eh? I was so excited, though, which made Shiva excited. Jackpot!

So that’s it! Thrilling stuff. I bet you’re glad you stuck around. Next I’m thinking of working on a trick Aleksandra captured in one of her posts. It’s probably going to be even more challenging but I think I’m up to the task. After all – unlike agility –  tricks I can train while lounging on the couch.  That is my kind of activity!

  1. Oh MAN she looks like she’s SO much fun to train with! I’m so jealous of how quiet she is!!!

I’m still waiting for my damn videos to upload and you’ll see the screaming terror that is Charlie.

I’ve been haphazardly shaping are you shy with Charlie for like 2 years heehee. Never spent much time on it, but you may have reignited the flame!

  2. That’s the trick I’m working on. I can get to the point your at with Vito but I can’t get a hold. With the corgi I can get that swipe, OR I can get a hold with it 2 inches away but not on the nose. Very frustrating!

  4. Oh, I want to try that with Miss M. You should do a play by play about how you did it. Your question about CGC inspired me to write a post about it for next week. It will involve bad judgments like rubbing cured meats on my hands in an attempt to make her perform.

  5. Clever girl, Shiva! Her shy trick is so cute and she’s so eager and full of enthusiasm of doing it.

I taught Eva this trick too and it took me ages. Well, I think it is unfair to say that she isn’t clever, the problem is me that I give up easily and I always get myself stuck and I don’t know how to teach her probably : ) Hopeless me!!!

  6. SQUEE! Oh, Shiva! You are just about the cutest thing…EVER! You did a most great job of acting likes you were shy. I almost believed you actually WERE shy! I’m not sure if I could learn that trick or not but I might talk to mom abouts giving it a try.

  7. Oh how adorable – it brought a smile to my face. I’ve been so blue all week because my dog Abby has been diagnosed with auto immune hemolitic anemia and because of her age (13) the prognosis is not good. It helps to see a happy healthy pup enjoying her life. Great going Shiva!
