Tuesday Time-out

As I seem to have less and less time these days (has someone been moving the clock forward on me??? I swear it was just Friday) I have been pulling out some of Shiva’s old toys to keep her occupied. The one shown below is the Nina Ottosson Pyramid. I imagine it is a lot like the Kong Wobbler, only more expensive.

Luckily, it is also probably a lot more durable.

While Shiva adores the toy and it is a great way to feed her meals, it is also very, very loud. This prevents me from pulling it out more often.

I guess it’s a trade-off. If it wasn’t made of such hard plastic, we would use it more. But if it wasn’t made of such hard plastic, it would have been destroyed about three days in.

What can you do? At least we taught her to keep it on the carpet.

Really, what more can our neighbours ask? I mean, she isn’t barking at them from the window. They ought to be grateful.

  1. A mother once told me, “Never buy toys that make noise as gifts. It will drive the parents nuts.”

I never heeded her advice. Loud toys are so much fun!

  2. I just bought Honey a Kong Wobbler and she loves it. Yep, carpeting is key. Except our only carpeted area is in an upstairs hall–let’s just say it gets a whole lot noisier when the Wobbler bounces down the stairs ands ends up in the foyer.

Anyway, I can see one thing that makes your toy harder than the Wobbler (and for that reason, noisier). The hole is at the top instead of the middle so Shiva has to work harder to get the food to fall out.

I’m glad you love Shiva enough to give her noise toys that are a pain in the a**.

  3. I still put food in a normal large Kong for Justus. It is fun to see him work it out though it takes him no time at all. If I had that toy, I would have houndsong ad nauseum till it was empty – plus, no carpet!

  4. I thankfully live on the ground floor, so my guys get to be as obnoxiously loud with toys as they’d like. And I feed them all their meals frozen in toys (they eat raw). I did have a toy like that (Tug a Jug) but it was a less sturdy plastic and Charlie destroyed it in a few weeks.

Kudos to you for teaching her to keep it on the carpet though. Emma’s hopeless and eats in her crate.

  5. Eva is small and she has a small kong which she loves a lot. I always put greenie in it. We’re also blessed that she is quite gentle and kind to her toys so her toys can last for a longer time : ) I think we save a lot of money on getting her new toys.
Eva likes her squeaky toys and she plays with them when she is bored. However, she is the one who makes all the noise instead of her toys. She barks all the time. No, she isn’t barking at the neighbours from the window, she is barking at them directly whenever she sees them because she wants to play with them or because she thinks they annoy her by making noise !!! Oops!!!

  6. We have the Bosco Cube or whatever it’s called. And Mak LOVES IT. Or hates it. It’s really hard to tell. I mean he LOVES getting food, but he HATES that the cube prevents him from doing so in less than 3 seconds which is usually how long it takes him to eat his entire dinner. He’s like a vacuum, that one.

  7. Heehee…Shiva suuuuure does luv that toy! I have the Wobbler but, well, to tell you the truth – I’m a teensy bit skeered of it. Plus, me and Brudder Ranger can’t play with it at the same time cuz he’s all, “Get away from it! It’s mine!” And then when I do, he just sits there and stares at it. But Shiva has inspired me! I oughta get mom to get it out for me (JUST me) again and see what happens.

  8. Looks like Shiva uis having fun. Song has a Kong, but more than once I’ve come home to find a table knocked oer and the things on top strewn about. I think she must get the Kong underneath and then in her haste to get it, she knocks the table over.

  9. We have the NO Brick. Sure didn’t take Ryker long to figure that one out.. a minute or two. He has a kong too. Mostly he just really enjoys a good raw bone.

  10. We got called out by a neighbor the other day for the dogs running back and forth(it was a furniture delivery–not like it happens all the time), but we have to be wary of our noise levels. Though I was really interested in getting something like that for Miss M. I think she needs more mental puzzles.

  12. Charlie has a ball, (I call it the moon ball) and he loves it. I put some food out in his bowl and put some in the ball just to see what happened and he went for the ball first even though he’s only gotten his supper in it, never treats.

It’s not very loud either, you hear the food rolling around but it isn’t that bad, I watch TV and I don’t even turn up the volumn:)

  13. I think you may be on to something with this time theft theory! I swear that I have less and less time every day, too! I’d sure like to know where it all goes.

I am now wondering if one of those wobblers would amuse Morgan for a little while. Finding something that keeps her occupied is becoming a third full time job, right after the one that pays me and the blog! lol

  14. I have a ball that my lab rolls around the house to get the treats to come out. Talk about noisy–she would get WILD with that thing when she was younger (I never minded the noise, because it was so fun to watch). I don’t dare get it out anymore, because she’s 12 years old and loses her footing on the linoleum floor when it rolls in that direction. This toys seems like a great alternative. I’m so glad you posted a video of it. Thanks! 🙂 Sophie can play again!

  15. Treat puzzle toys are the best! When we have long meetings in the office and don’t want to take the dogs with us, they get the puzzle toys filled with treats to keep them occupied. 🙂

  16. We have one that is really loud, too, but they love it so much. I’ve been using it more often now, too, with the lack of exercise my kiddos are getting with all the bad weather.
