Good Times

What we’ve been up to this weekend:

Yes, it’s kind of a crappy photo, taken with the PH’s Blackberry, but we have almost no pictures showcasing Shiva’s agility prowess. Partly because she moves too fast and partly because I am way too busy making sure she doesn’t take the tunnel for the 4,586,970th time. This one is probably the best we have so far. (Advice on taking better fast-motion photos would be very well-received).

Shiva did good today during our private session. Better than expected. She still ran around like an idiot and tried to shop for treats, of course. Her focus waned after a little while, which is to be understood. We covered a LOT of ground. I felt like I needed a mental break too. Most of what we need to work on involves my skill-less handling. Shiva is a super fast, super vigilant dog. If I hesitate at all, the whole sequence is flubbed. Our instructor seems to believe she has improved greatly and that we may be ready for a trial in the fall. That doesn’t mean I will be ready, of course, but it is very happy information.

Shiva is not completely nuts after all! Yay! She can be taught!

The jury is still out on me.

  1. Wow she looks great!
Congrats on the progress – so exciting!
I have my camera set to take a rapid series of shots in a row. Something like one shot every 1/100 of a second? Or something. It’s the only way I can get pics of Catty and Tibby playing together.

  2. Go Shiva Go!

How exciting that you’ll be able to trial in a few months. I love watching the spirited beginner dogs at trials. They are always sure to surprise you-one way or another- regardless, they are very entertaining!

  3. Wow, I’m blown away at how far out Shiva is taking that jump. She’s a real wonder pup.

Congratulations to you both on your progress. Don’t forget neither of you could do this on your own.

  4. Shiva looks great! If you want better action photos, try using the sports setting on your camera. It allows you to take photos at a faster rate and gives you a better shot at catching a good one amongst all the action. I have a ton of duds that I throw out in between the good ones that I manage to catch.

  5. I have my camera set on ‘burst’ mode most of the time. It will take 3 or 10 shots in a row, nothing in between:) A lot of the time I get photos of grass or tails or noses but sometimes I get an awesome flukey shot. You’re going to need something like this to catch Shiva in action!! She’s looking wonderful. You’ll be ready, don’t worry. Looking forward to reading about your first trial … and seeing some great photos:)

  6. That’s a great shot! Shiva is doing so well and I’m sure she will beat everybody in agility because of her super speed.
I use Sports setting on my camera to catch Eva’s zooming pictures and many a time, I’ve to get rid a lot of blurry pictures even though I’m using this setting. I guess I just have to practise more often.

  7. Hey now, don’t be hard on yourself! Your instructor believes she’s improved greatly. That means you’ve done great, too! Enjoy a mental break and treat yourself while you’re at it!

Shiva is looking bad ass in that photo! Very cool.

  8. What a lovely post! My father used to do agility with his collie, and I remember him congratulating his beautiful dog and bemoaning his own skills: you do remind me of him! I think the photo of Shiva is fantastic, right in the middle of taut jump: what a clever, clever girl!

  9. Good job on your progress! The photo is still nice, even if it’s a bit blurry. Shiva looks very elegant.
Good luck for the future trials! Don’t be nervous, I’m sure with some practice, you both will do great.

  10. Shiva looks like a land dolphin jumping those hurdles. Wow! Look at that extension! Go for that first trial , Kristine! You and Shiva will have a blast. There’s only one first time, so bring your camera. I didn’t get my first run recorded, and am still kicking myself. :-\

  11. Fantastic progress! She looks gorgeous stretched out preparing for that jump. Per your request for photo advice, we recently bought a new Sony camera that has a “Sports” setting for fast action. A camera with that kind of setting MIGHT be able to catch Shiva’s moves.

  12. Amazing that you captured Shiva in motion on the BlackBerry. I have often missed a great action shot because the camera is too slow to grab the shot.

Congrats on your progress! I have heard that agility is hard work – for both owner and dog, so I think you are not alone in that matter. I admire your dedication to it and Shiva. P.S. I have a Sony and it captures some of the best action shots. It’s just a small digital one, but it is my favorite camera now.
