Shiva’s Secret Shame

I am embarrassed to admit this to you all but it is time we came clean. There is no easy way to say this so I am just going to put it out there.

Shiva the Dog is an addict.

Her drug of choice?

Antlers.

It saddens me to show this shameful evidence of secret chewing but it is undeniable.

Her addiction has gotten so bad, after I get home and let her out of the crate, she goes right back in. She just can’t get through the day without the antler she craves.

You may want to avert your eyes.

It’s our fault. We’re the ones to bring it in the house. The first one we can be forgiven for, but we never should have bought the second. We should have remembered what happened with the marrow bone at Christmas. We should have known antlers would just be ten times worse. Less than two months after her first nibble and look how far she has fallen!  How could we have missed the signs?

It’s time for an intervention. For the next couple days, we are putting Shiva in rehab. I feel awful about it but it is the only way she will break this life-destroying habit.

Just look at her, all strung out, begging for for more. My poor innocent puppy is corrupted!

  1. Eh, could be worse. If you don’t want to continue to sell limbs for said antlers check out the more bulk elk antler supplier

Glad you have found something that she can really sink her teeth into safely and get her chew on, I know it’s been hard. My dogs say those are not worth the effort. She probably would like the elk ones even more as they have more pith (center) to them.

    • Those look impressive! And they are bigger so they would last longer. That’s the hard part. We can’t be running to the store every week to get Shiva her fix!

  2. I’ve never heard of chewing antlers! I wonder if my dogs would like them? Don’t worry Shivster, we love you regardless of what you chew! So go get your chew on.

  3. Oh, that bottom picture is too priceless!

Our Best Friend just destroyed the screen in our living room window trying to attack his arch-nemesis from down the street (Buster, who attacked Max about a year ago– dogs have LONG memories). If he had been in a crate chewing antlers it wouldn’t have happened!

  4. lol… The one (and only) time we got gwynn one of those smoked knuckle bones (as opposed to the ones lacking in strangely-bacon-like odour), he acted like a crack-addict. After about half an hour of him barely coming up to breathe, gnawing on that thing and huffing, I took it away. until all the bacon-ness had been taken off, he could only have it for about 15 minutes at a time before it creeped me out too much 😛
at least you’ve found a great busy-toy for her in her crate!

    • Heh, good to know my dog isn’t the only one suffering under the power of the chew.

It is a good thing, I guess as it keeps her busy. But I agree on the creepy factor. Sometimes she just gets way too into it and her eyes glaze over. It can also bring her over-threshold, which isn’t good. We just have to monitor her behaviour, I guess.

    • That’s a good way of looking at it. The more she chews, the less I will have to deal with brushing her teeth!

Of course you are on HER side. 😉

    • Song is far too lady-like to form an addiction to antlers. She knows how to control her baser urges I am sure. 🙂

  5. I’ve never given Riley an antler. Now I’m convinced I shouldn’t! Riley has many addictions…like to balls, sticks, Wubbas, etc, etc, etc…so I’m sure she would be hooked on antlers!

Good luck with the intervention and rehab! We hope Shiva doesn’t have a relapse!!

    • I didn’t have the heart to keep it from her for long. She spent the last half hour getting her fix but I think it’s time to remind her to breathe!

    • Very, very true. I will be forever grateful Shiva appears to have no interest rolling in anything. She even ignores dead fish. Whew!

  6. Don’t tell Shiva what Shayne found on a hike earlier this spring.

Antlers are a HUGE favorite in the house…but they aren’t quite as obsessive about it.

I got a box of antlers for free from an avid outdoors-man/hunter which was awesome since they are so expensive 🙂 Not sure if you have freecycle up in your neck of the woods but you may be able to get feed your addict without ending up in the poor-house!

    • Nice! I think the PH may have some hunting friends; I’ll have to ask him if they could keep her in the good stuff without us running to the store every week.

Maybe once antlers become a more regular thing she will get over this obsession?

That photo is so cute. Shayne looks so proud. 🙂

  7. Yep, that antler-crack is hard to kick. JF and Dewi would know. 😦

(I have heard that the elk antlers, as Anna stated, are much longer lasting. Of course that would not help Shiva’s habit in the least.) 🙂

    • I’m going to look for them now and see if we may know anyone who hunts and can keep us fully stocked.

Good to know Shiva has friends in low places. 😉

  8. Hahaha! Hey it could be worse – she could be addicted to a much stinkier treat like those rolled up and dried fish skins (speaking from experience – I’m a total enabler).

    • Nice! Thanks for the link!

Er, I mean, not that Shiva needs it because she’s totally going cold turkey.

Maybe you will be lucky and Charlie won’t be that interested. Then again… It may not be worth the risk!

    • Shiva loves them too, obviously. I don’t know how we kept them from her for so long!

      Thanks for stopping by!

Shiva has already found the hidden stash. This may be harder than I thought…

  9. I’ve never tried antlers with my guys. They aren’t sold in the shops here but I daresay I could find a deerstalker who could get me one/some for them to try. Are they dried out or fresh I wonder? Maybe I shouldn’t start them down that sticky path though? Antlers do sound intriguing chewies for them:)

  10. I read your post yesterday and laughed (finally I am getting them on my Blackberry again! Yay!). I think Shiva’s obsession is a bit stronger than my dogs, but they love their antlers too. And, when I have dogs boarding with me they are a huge hit.

Go ahead Shiva! Enjoy your antler!

  11. i’m going to try these . . . are they stinky? our chick is addicted to hooves, which are totally gross and smell like the most awful thing in the whole world. i wonder if the antlers would be a suitable alternative for our chewing addict…

  12. Oh, Shiva, I never would have thought you were an addict! However bad your adiction is, I can think of a few other things worse than antlers…So I don’t know why your mum’s complaining about it, really 😛
