K9 Kamp: Day One

Photobucket

The day has arrived. It is time for me to get off the couch, turn off Animal Planet, and join Koly and Kelly in some hard-core fitness challenges. My days of being lazy are over. No more long afternoons cuddling on the couch with Shiva. For the next month and a half we are going to put ourselves to the test!

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of Shiva laughing at me. I guess it will just be myself being tested. Shiva is already pretty much at her physical peak. If her muscles were to get any bigger she wouldn’t fit in the agility tunnel. There is no challenge this dog can’t tackle and summarily defeat. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing about myself. The evidence speaks for itself:

I look like I haven't run for years, Shiva looks like she is strolling casually down the street

Since it is no fun to workout alone, Shiva has kindly agreed to be my personal coach. You can bet she is no softie and I am counting on her to put me through my paces. It will be K9 “Boot” Kamp in every sense you can imagine.

And don’t you get too comfortable either. I am not going to let anyone get off easy. If I am going to torture myself in the name of fitness, I expect you to do the same. Kolchak and Kelly are still looking for campers and they are making it worth your while. With over $1000 in fantastic prizes from their sponsors they have created a real temptation. Just for participating in the challenges, bloggers will be entered to win weekly prize packages, as well as a super secret grand prize! I hear it is quite the thing.

This week’s challenge and prize package is posted on Kolchak and Kelly’s  websites. If you are brave enough to join in, check them out for more information! You won’t be disappointed. You may not be able to walk for weeks afterwards, but you won’t be disappointed.

I guess I’d better go find those running shoes…

  1. I bet Shiva will be quite the coach. She could have a whole near career in front of her–you could rent Shiva out as a personal trainer.

I’ll be watching from the bleachers and cheering loudly for all the participants. I’ll probably try to follow along with the challenges for fun but I’m afraid to commit to one more thing this month.

    I know you’ll have a great time.

    • C’mon, I can’t be the only one completely over-extended! 😛
Very smart move on you part I’d say. I really don’t know why I get myself into this things. Who needs sleep, right?

      I do appreciate the encouragement!

  2. sounds like fun! I’m sure Shiva will kick your butt into gear 🙂
I want to join, but am not really seeing how on their websites… they don’t even seem to have comments sections… However, walking 60 minutes this week, that, I can do 🙂

There should be a comments section on our blog. Uh oh! Where did it go?! I played around with the settings a bit and HOPEFULLY, you should be able to see it now! If you go to the link below it should tell you how you can get involved with K9 Kamp. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have! The comments section should be at the very bottom, just under the Rafflecopter to enter for the prizes!

    • The walking part should be simple. Since we walk at least 90 minutes a day, usually a lot more, I am going to have to kick it up a notch to make it a real challenge.

I am glad you are going to join in!

  3. Good luck with the challenge! I thought you kept up pretty well with your super fast dog on the videos you posted.

We are still in heavy hunt test training mode. Maybe once that is over I will have the energy to participate, (or I may just collapse). 🙂

    • Thanks for the compliment! The truth is, I am working on learning how to be a lazier handler when it comes to agility. Hopefully eventually Shiva will be able to take the obstacles further and further away from me so I won’t have to work so hard to keep up with her. It will increase her speed and save my energy!

No doubt your hunt test training is challenge enough! Lots of luck to you for future trials!

  4. I too am going to be a lurker on this one– with our impending move and a special needs elderbelle foster, I’m not sure how much working out with my dogs I can do. But I am going to try to participate in as many as possible, and may write about them!

    • Right on. You have more than enough challenges going on in your life and I officially excuse you from camp. If anything, I’d say you need to schedule in some time for relaxation!

    • Awesome! Thanks for listing all of the prizes in the package. That is quite a bag o’ loot and well worth all the effort. It should be a lot of fun regardless and I know my dog’s antics will make all the tiredness worthwhile!

  6. Oh fun! I have seen the badge for the K9 Camp on a few blogs. Maybe Sophie and I will give this a try. Though like Shiva, Sophie is in good physical shape…me not so much!

  7. Yay! Have fun – I know Shiva will be a great coach! Since Cali is 12, she enjoys more of the low impact workouts now 🙂

Saturday my hubby and I are doing the Warrior Dash (eek – I’m so nervous!) It’s a 5K with 14 obstacles including fire, mud and barbed wire (it sounded like a good idea when we signed up in January . . .now I’m not so sure!)

We will enjoy following your progress. One of the workouts that I REALLY enjoy is Zumba – if you like to dance and sweat – it’s a fun workout 🙂 Good luck!

    • That’s so fantastic! Good for you. Running through fire is enough of a challenge for one year! One lifetime! I hope you write about your experiences and share some photos. That event sounds absolutely insane!

I’ve heard a lot about Zumba but have no idea how to get involved. Also, I am reluctant to sign up for any classes that take me out of the house on a week night. I feel guilty enough as it is for leaving Shiva alone when I am at work. Maybe someone needs to start a class like that for humans AND dogs.

Good luck to you as well!

  8. We’ll cheer you on from the sidelines! (Actually, I will be participating in the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope on Sunday, but I don’t think Our Best Friend is invited, so it wouldn’t count.) My life is going to get busy soon, and I can’t take on any more challenges, so you will be my vicarious stand-in!

    • No dogs allowed at the walk? Poor OBF. Or should I say, lucky OBF? 😉 I hope you have a great time! Congratulations on participating! When I worked for a different non-profit that held a yearly walk I was always too busy working at the event to actually join in on the exercise.

  9. Best of luck with your challenge – this sounds a wonderful idea and Shiva will make the perfect coach, I only wish I could do it with the kitties 😦 and hey the blog looks really great, love the header!

    • Yeah, I can’t see convincing my cat that working out with me is a good idea either. While some people are able to train their cats to walk on a leash, we are no where near that level!

Thanks! I am glad you like the new design!

  10. Funny you should post this as I have been trying to figure out ways to start getting Luna (and me) in shape for hunt season. If this rain ever stops maybe we will get out. Luna is off to a show tomorrow through the weekend so hopefully we can make out next week.
Good luck, will be fun to follow your progress

    • It’s been raining here a lot this week too. We’ve had such a wet year in general. I am hoping the fall will be much nicer.

Good luck at the show! I am sure Luna will be a huge success!

  11. Oh man! Are you going to make me get off the couch too???
A prize value that large may be worth it. First, I have to go see what these challenges are all about. (Did I hear Shiva laughing again?)
    I’m definitely curious.

  12. Ha! Kristine I have already got you beat! 2 1/2 hour walk on Sunday, 1 hour on Saturday and an hour each day this week except for today (too late getting home from work).
