How Not to Shop on Etsy

I mentioned before how I am attempting to do all of my holiday shopping online this year. It’s cheaper – oddly enough – and it will hopefully save my sanity. Originally I had a deadline of December 1st, but I am not so sure that’s going to work out. Especially if I keep getting distracted by some of the bizarre things people put up for sale on Etsy.com.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the online craft marketplace is fantastic. What a great way for some very talented people to make a name for themselves, as well as some extra money. It is almost impossible to break into retail and Etsy provides an awesome opportunity for sellers and for buyers to find some pretty unique items. Some of my favourite gifts have been from Etsy. However, I find it is a bit like shopping at a consignment store. One has to search very hard to find the treasure. My love for snark often delays this hunt.

For instance, a recent foray into the unknown presented me with this excellent t-shirt.

If only I could decide who it would suit more… It’s pretty tempting to just buy if for myself.

Maybe I just don’t have the right Etsy skills. There should almost be a course for uninitiated Etsy shoppers. A kind of “How To Shop on Etsy Without Snickering and Sending Snarky Links to Your Friends All Night.” With a better title, of course.

I have managed to find some cute items. This handbag is one of my favourites.

But shortly after that great find, I happened upon this puppy purse. It kind of freaked me out a little. Is it just me, or is the puppy watching a little too intently?

And while these baby booties are just precious:

I don’t know what to think of these:

Clearly, I need some help. Maybe I just don’t know how to properly appreciate arts and crafts.

Maybe I should just stick to the mall.

  1. Love this post. Tugs by Tena is based on Etsy (for now) and there are some crazy items I’ve found on there. I really just dont’ know what to make of some of the things I’ve seen. Some are REALLY cool but still one of those.. hmmm *tilt head and ad inquisitive look*

I’m trying to do the vast majority of my shopping for others this year at local or small businesses…. i made a few exceptions for thing i needed (ie another external harddrive because y others are full and i only have 5gb of space on my compy LOL) but am doing well with purchases for others 🙂

    • Tugs by Tena is definitely one of the good ones. Unfortunately, the good ones are not always easy for me to find. Do you have any searching advice? I lost all my shopping powers when I started working for non-profits, methinks.

    • Hahahahahaha! That is hilarious! I have been recommended that blog by so many people but never got around to reading it. That was one of the funniest posts I have read in a long time. The woman has guts!

  2. Hi, I didn’t know about Etsy but I’m a boy dog so that’s why. I’m not really into purses or baby slippers, except to chew on. Without the baby in them of course. I’d rather be at my food and treat store.

  3. I LOVE etsy, especially the handbags. I bought so many from one vendor that she started sending me free bags! Talk about customer appreciation!

Now that wouldn’t happen at a department store.

    • That’s awesome! Totally justifies the purchases too. I am going to tell my husband this the next time he questions why I own so many jackets.

Etsy rules. Or it will when I figure it out. 😛

  4. Have you seen sadetsydogs.wordpress.com? I find a lot of great items for my shop from etsy but have to wade through piles and piles o’ crap before I find them so I know how you feel. But a glance through sadetsydogs gets my giggles out so I can focus on the good and ignore the ridiculous.

  5. I have never actually purchased something from etsy- but it does provide me plenty of amusement when I have nothing else to do online and am avoiding doing house cleaning.

    • LOL. I never thought of it that way. Not that I ever really need an excuse to avoid cleaning. These days my dust bunnies have dust bunnies.

  6. I find Etsy…overwhelming. It can be hard to be a productive shopper on there. Even when I find something cute my crafty side tells me I could try to make it myself!

    • Ah, see, that’s where we differ. I don’t have a crafty side. I don’t even have a crafty quarter, or eighth. Or sixteenth for that matter. Etsy is full of many things I’d never be able to make for myself. It lures me in that way.

Except tie-dye. I can handle that particular skill.

    • Sadly, I don’t think it suits me. I’ll leave it for those with more style than I. 😉

Glad you agree. I thought at first it might be cute for a kid. But then I thought about how such things gave me nightmares at a young age and changed my mind. It’s just weird.

  7. I have an Etsy Store and have bought heaps of awesome things from there.
My advice is when you like a store add it to your favourites. This allows Etsy to generate ‘suggested stores’ which have similar stock to stuff you like.

You can also add people to your ‘circle’ which means you can see stuff that they like (which quite often you’ll like too). I also like searching for random vintage toys I remember from the 198os 🙂

  8. Cute post! I’ve never spent too much time on Etsy. I did buy a wonderful necklace and the seller/jeweler was great to work with. I knew what I was looking for and therefore didn’t venture off into the hinterlands of Etsy. Based on this post, I am obviously missing out on a good time!

I think the puppy purse looks like an opossum!

PS Found your blog through Elizabeth / Chronicles of Cardigan.

  9. What an study in contrasts–from the ridiculous to the sublime.

But the tie-dyed t-shirt? I can’t snark at that too much. It’s practically the uniform here in Ithaca, NY. You’re required to put one on as soon as you enter the city limits. 🙂

  10. Mwuahahahah it kind of reminds me of the ‘sad boyfriends of Etsy’ – there are so many poor saps who are posing with crazy looking hats or cardigans or whatever on there.

  11. Hahahaa! I get lost on Etsy, too. And I also do all my shopping online, I’m allergic to actually going into a real store and interacting with real people. SHUDDER. If you develop super Etsy skills, please inform me!

  12. You actually only need one item to start and you can set your own price. The cost of listing an item is very very reasonable.

I have been on Etsy for just a little bit. I have sold two things, but only have a few items listed. My advice would be to look on there for shops similar to the kinds of things you wish to sell and it will actually tell you how many items they have sold, so you can get an idea of how well those types of items are doing. It’s definitely worth a try and with very little investment. It’s a fun community to belong to also, lots of helpful, creative, friendly people.
    Good luck to you!

  13. LOL there’s definitely been some heinous things on there! Have you ever seen the Regretsy blog? Amazing. I love Etsy too, it’s my main go-to for gifts, especially this time of year, but there’s always going to be an element of cray-cray in the online marketplace! 🙂

  15. Is that the dog from Coraline? Are you going to buy a doll of the “Other Mother” too? I have found some amazing stuff on Etsy – and some questionable stuff too. Love the idea and supporting the small retailers though. So much cooler than a guift card or something bought at the department store!
