Thoughts I’ve Had While Running

The fog is really thick this morning. Thicker than pea soup even. More like the pea soup from the can before it is heated up, when it falls into the pan all goopy. But less disgusting.

Running in ballet flats is probably a bad idea. I am sure I am going to pay for this. Oh well.

Wow, Shiva really can eat garbage, lunge at other dogs, sniff grass, and run at the same time. Dogs are the best multi-taskers in the world. It’s a good thing they can’t type or humans would be out of work.

I really need to find out the name of the muscle at the back of my thigh. That way when I whine about it on my blog I will sound smart.

Woo hoo! I made it to the end of the block! Go me! Now if only I could stop heaving like my cat with a hairball.

Halifax is way too humid of a city to have so many hills. It’s a conspiracy!

Running with a reactive dog should be an Olympic event.

Ow ow OW ow OW! Ack! There is another runner up ahead! Must. Look. Casual.

I really hate my dog sometimes. Is she even trotting?? This is how slow I am. My dog can walk to keep up with me. Next time I am totally getting a pug.

I could really go for a cheeseburger right now.

That creepy old man is standing on the corner again. Should I cross the road? Would that be rude? Why do I care about being rude? He’s totally going to wave at me, I just know it. Can’t you see I am busy? Why do all Maritimers need to chat with every stranger they see?

This bites.

In case you missed my post last week, I haven’t lost my mind but I have decided to run the 5K in the Blue Nose Marathon in support of the Nova Scotia SPCA. Amazingly, I am almost halfway to my goal of $500 with several weeks still to go! That makes it all worthwhile.

  1. You’re running with the SPCA!! That’s awesome. I thought about it but I suck at running. I’ve been running with kobi was we’re up to almost 2k going around my neighbourhood. I totally agree with you about the humidity! Today was the first morning I ran without a jacket and it was still muggy! I’ve actually been finding that Kobi is better at not reacting to things when he runs, he just gets into a groove and keeps going. Once in a while if I try to pass a woman he’ll lunge at them and throw me all off balance, then sometimes he throws tantrums and starts mouthing at his leash which drives me crazy!
Keep up the good work! Maybe I’ll consider joining the marathon after all!

    • You totally should! You can’t suck any more than I do. Shiva and I have only really been running together for two weeks. Given how I am feeling today, I am not sure doing the 5K thing was a smart choice, but the cause will keep me going. I can die after the race.

That’s great Kobi’s reactivity is better when running. I actually find Shiva’s slides a little due to the extra excitement. But I’ve gotten a better handle on it and now can reward her while running if necessary so her lunging is at a minimum. I was worried about a relapse but hopefully that has been avoided now. Which is a huge relief as I am sure you know.

I was so glad to see the sunshine this morning! Let’s hope it keeps up!

      • Do they let dogs run to? Really Kobi is my one and only motivation for running!
I posted some tips about running with reactive dogs, maybe there is something there that will help you and Shiva out? I know what you mean about relapsing though. I’m always nervous every time I want to take a step forward it may throw us 10 steps back but Kobi keeps proving me wrong!

  2. Hahahaha been there! I think I might have had that whole inner monologue. My dog can walk to keep up with me too, the show off. So excited that you making progress toward your goal and I will definitely be cheering you on the whole way and eager to hear more about how it’s all going!

    • Thanks! I am really going to need the support! This morning I couldn’t even bring myself to run as my ankles (that’s a first) are hurting too much. I am hoping I’ll be in less pain this evening. Is it just me or do you find your muscles kind of go through a cycle of pain? Maybe I need to learn a better technique.

  3. some of my thoughts while ive been running.

    – wow I sound like a heard of elephants
    – is that chub rub I feel?
    – My dog is prolly embarassed im going so slow.
    – I’ll walk after this car passes so no one sees me 🙂

Keep up the good job on running!

    • Hahaha! Been there on all counts. It’s funny. At first I would stop running as soon as I saw someone as I thought they would think me strange for flailing down the street with my dog. Now I think they will judge me if I stop. Our thoughts are so silly, aren’t they?

  4. Ha! Too funny.

Props on the running! And for such a good cause. I’ve never been able to get into running – always thought it was boring. Maybe it would be less so if I tried going with Alma (Moses wouldn’t be up for it). Might be something worth testing.

    • Running on a treadmill is definitely boring. Or on a track. I don’t think I could do that. But running with Shiva around our neighbourhood- just like walking with Shiva – is never dull. Sometimes I wish it was!

  5. Lol hilarious, and kudos to you for remembering these thoughts. And yes I am sure you will feel the ballet flats later. I think the muscles are called hamstrings?? I hear you on getting your dog to trot, I have to fly around the ring to keep up with Luna. I always envied the people with the little dogs who could walk around the ring as their dog ran…. criminal how easy they have it.

Keep up with the great work

    • I was thinking hamstrings but then I wondered if that was something else. It’s been so long since high school phys. ed. I’ve forgotten it all.

It is criminal! Thank you! It’s totally unfair in agility when other handlers can practically walk around the course and they still remain ahead of their dogs. I have no hope of doing that, even if running full out.

      Thanks for the encouragement!

  6. Great post, Kristine! But I do have a favor to ask. Next time you write a post in this vein, it would be helpful if you would post a warning that advises people not to read and drink steaming hot liquid at the same time. Because when you spit it out all over yourself, it burns. But don’t worry – I won’t sue. 🙂

  7. This was funny Kristine. I’m actually amazed that you can remember all the thoughts that go through one’s mind. The only thing I can think of when I have to run is “God how long do I have to keep this up, why don’t my knees work?” 🙂

  8. Thoughts I had while reading your post:
    I love those shoes.
How many shoes is too many?
Will Rod divorce me if I get another pair of shoes?
    Perhaps I could hide them.
If I had those shoes, I wouldn’t have to run in them … right?
I need to let Kristine know that I want to sponsor her in the run – how do I go about doing that?

    • Aren’t they awesome? Purple is my favourite colour. When I saw them on the Animal Rescue website I couldn’t resist. I justified it by saying some of the money goes to help animals. Also, I believe for every pair of shoes purchased, one pair is given to someone in a developing country. So it’s a win-win!

And no, you wouldn’t have to run in them. I haven’t even worn mine yet because I am scared of wrecking them!

Aww, thank you so much for asking! My sponsor page is here: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=1396853&langPref=en-CA

PS. Is there such a thing as too many shoes? I remain unsure.

    • The resources I’ved used all use time markers but while running with Shiva it’s hard to carry my phone with me or a stop watch. So I just use landmarks. I really should map it out by distance to have more of an idea how far I am actually going.

  9. Frequently, my thought on running with Elka is “OH GOD”, because she ran up ahead of me, and ran for a certain amount of time like that, and then turned around and ran at me as hard as she could. We’ve turned it into a game now, but that first time? I thought I was going to die.

    • LOL. Shiva used to do that too. Running made her so excited she would spend most of the time jumping on me. It did not make it very easy. Luckily she has gotten over that!

  10. Hi Kristen, ha, ha, ha I thought that the description of Shiva eating stuff, barking and lunging at other dogs, sniff things and walk at the same time was really funny. Why don’t you have a sponsor button so that we could contribute to your run?

  11. I felt the same actually when I was running the first time.. I have seen a lot of things that eventually come up into my mind what to do with it.. I can relate to you here..

  12. Ha ha!! Love it 😉 The hardest part of running is the silly conversation that goes on in our heads . .
    “I’m going to stop”
“NO! Don’t stop – if the people that are on the biggest loser can run . .you can run” “oh, I hate it when young, skinny people pass me like I’m standing still”
    “I’m too old to run”
    “I hate running”
    “Running sucks!”
No you know why I gave up running for yoga!!! You go girl! Good luck with your race 🙂

  14. LOL, I try not to think while I run. My mind race faster than my legs and I usually trip. Somehow, it takes all my energy to keep my lungs from exploding. I’m very impressed though. Very very impressed.

  15. oh my gosh, this one cracked me up.

we get a ridiculous amount of fog around here, too. fog, wind, and bugs are the downsides to living by the water. also the possibility of washing away in a hurricane or massive flood. hmm…maybe i should move… lol
